Hybrid turf is a synthetic ground reinforcement product designed to work together with natural turfgrass. Unlike traditional artificial turf, which replaces natural grass with a fully synthetic surface, hybrid turf allows living grass to grow through its structure. The natural grass and synthetic turf work together, with the hybrid turf helping protect the plant crown and ground from heavy traffic.
For dog yards, that combination offers an interesting middle ground: you can help protect natural grass and reduce mud without replacing your living lawn.
How Does Hybrid Turf Work?
Think of hybrid turf as a protective layer for the ground.
Natura hybrid turf uses a three-dimensional, perforated design that is installed over prepared soil, grass seed, existing grass, or sod. The openings allow grass and other vegetation to grow through the surface while water and air continue moving through to the soil below.
Once vegetation becomes established, the natural grass and hybrid turf work together. The grass creates the living lawn dogs know and love, while Natura helps protect the crown of the plant from repeated paw traffic.
That protection can be especially valuable in places where dogs tend to wear grass down again and again, such as fence lines, gates, dog runs, and favorite play areas.
Hybrid Turf vs. Artificial Turf: What’s the Difference?
Hybrid turf and artificial turf both incorporate synthetic materials, but they’re designed to accomplish different things.
Traditional artificial turf generally replaces a living lawn. Existing grass and soil may be removed and replaced with base materials before synthetic turf is installed over the area. Depending on the system, installation can also require infill and other materials.
Hybrid turf is designed to become part of a living landscape rather than replace it.
Natura installs directly over prepared ground without the layers of rock, silica sand, or infill commonly associated with many traditional artificial turf installations. If you’re starting with grass seed, you can seed the soil before rolling Natura into place. If you already have established grass or sod, Natura can be installed over it.
Then the grass grows through.
Is Hybrid Turf Real Grass?
Hybrid turf itself isn’t real grass, but real grass can grow through it.
That’s an important distinction. Natura doesn’t create grass or guarantee that vegetation will grow. Grass still needs the right combination of soil, sunlight, moisture, climate, and lawn care.
Instead, Natura helps protect vegetation where growing conditions support it. Where grass has difficulty growing, the hybrid turf can still provide coverage over exposed soil and help create a barrier between paws and mud.
So rather than asking synthetic material to imitate a natural lawn, hybrid turf allows the living parts of your lawn to remain part of the surface.
Why Use Hybrid Turf for Dogs?
Dogs and natural grass have a complicated relationship.
Dogs love running on grass. They roll around in it, sniff it, play on it, and generally have a great time.
The grass doesn’t always fare quite as well.
Repeated paw traffic can wear away grass blades and damage the plant crown. Dogs often follow the same routes through a yard, which concentrates that traffic into relatively small areas. Eventually, a green fence line or path to the gate can turn into bare dirt.
Add some rain, and you’ve got mud.
Hybrid turf helps reinforce those hard-working areas. By protecting the ground from direct paw traffic, Natura can help preserve grass where it can grow and reduce muddy conditions where vegetation is thin.
Does Grass Grow Through Hybrid Turf?
Yes. That’s the whole idea.
Grass can grow through the perforations in Natura hybrid turf, allowing the synthetic reinforcement and living vegetation to work together.
You can use Natura with several approaches to establishing grass:
- Seed before installation: Prepare and seed the soil, then install Natura over it.
- Overseed after installation: Spread grass seed over Natura, and the seed can reach the soil through the openings.
- Install over existing grass: Natura can reinforce an established lawn that needs additional protection.
- Install over sod: Fresh sod can grow through the perforations while Natura helps protect it from paw traffic.
Choose a grass variety appropriate for your climate and growing conditions. Hybrid turf can protect grass, but it can’t make a sun-loving grass thrive in deep shade or make a warm-season variety love a northern winter.
Can You Mow Hybrid Turf?
Yes. If natural grass grows through Natura, mow it as you normally would.
Natura is less than an inch tall and is designed to remain below typical mower blade heights. Before mowing, it’s a good idea to quickly inspect the installation and make sure the turf is lying flat and the edges remain properly secured.
Then mow the living grass growing through it just like the rest of your lawn.
This is another major difference between hybrid and artificial turf. With traditional synthetic grass, there’s nothing growing that needs to be mowed. With hybrid turf, normal lawn maintenance can continue because you’re still maintaining a living landscape.
Does Hybrid Turf Require Infill?
Natura does not require infill.
Traditional synthetic turf systems may use silica sand or other infill materials between synthetic grass blades. Those materials can serve different purposes depending on the turf system.
Natura works differently. It installs over prepared ground and is anchored into place without a traditional artificial turf base or infill system.
As vegetation grows through Natura, it also helps integrate the hybrid turf into the surrounding landscape.
What Happens When Grass Goes Dormant?
Hybrid turf doesn’t stop natural grass from behaving naturally.
Depending on the species and climate, grass may go dormant during winter, summer heat, or periods of drought. When that happens, the grass may turn brown until growing conditions improve.
Natura remains in place during dormancy, helping protect the plant crown when the grass isn’t actively regenerating. That’s particularly useful for dog yards because dogs don’t stop running across the lawn just because the grass has stopped growing.
Once the appropriate growing conditions return, healthy dormant grass can begin its normal growth cycle again.
Does Hybrid Turf Get Hot?
Any outdoor surface can heat up in direct sunlight, so conditions should always be checked before dogs play outside during hot weather.
The important difference with hybrid turf is that Natura allows living vegetation to remain part of the surface. Established grass can continue providing the natural cooling effects of living plants rather than being replaced by a fully synthetic lawn.
How an individual area feels will depend on factors such as sunlight, air temperature, vegetation coverage, moisture, and climate.
Where Can You Install Hybrid Turf?
You can cover an entire dog yard with Natura, but you don’t necessarily have to.
One of the advantages of hybrid turf is the ability to target the places where your grass needs the most help. In a residential yard, that might mean the fence line your dog patrols every morning or the gate that turns into a mud pit after every storm.
For dog daycares, boarding facilities, apartment communities, and other high-traffic dog areas, larger installations can reinforce outdoor spaces that see considerably more paw traffic than the average backyard.
The goal is to look at how dogs actually use the space and protect the ground accordingly.
Is Hybrid Turf Right for Your Dog Yard?
Hybrid turf makes the most sense when you want additional durability without giving up the benefits of a living landscape.
Traditional artificial turf can be a solution when the goal is to replace natural grass entirely. But if you like real grass and simply need help protecting it from dogs, hybrid turf provides another option.
Natura hybrid turf lets grass grow through, allows dogs to sniff the natural ground beneath them, and helps keep paws separated from exposed soil and mud. You can mow it, seed through it, and maintain the living grass as part of your normal lawn care routine.
That’s what hybrid turf is all about: giving natural grass a little help keeping up with dogs.
